Pelling Travel Guide 2026: Everything You Need to Plan Your Trip
Pelling is a small hill town on a ridge in West Sikkim, sitting at about 2,150 metres (roughly 7,000 ft) and looking straight across at Kanchenjunga, the third-highest mountain in the world. People come for one moment above all: sunrise, when the snow peaks turn pink, then gold, while the valleys below are still dark. This guide covers everything you need to make that moment — and the rest of your trip — go smoothly.

Why visit Pelling?
Gangtok gets the crowds; Pelling gets the view. Because the town sits on an open ridge facing the Kanchenjunga massif, many hotels here look directly at the peaks — Kabru, Rathong, Kokthang, Pandim and Kanchenjunga itself. Beyond the view, Pelling is the base for some of Sikkim’s most important heritage sites: Pemayangtse Monastery (founded in 1705), the ruins of Rabdentse, Sikkim’s second capital, and Sanga Choeling, one of the state’s oldest monasteries. Add waterfalls, a sacred lake and a glass skywalk, and you have more than enough for a relaxed three-day trip.

How to reach Pelling
There is no airport or railway station in Pelling. Most travellers fly into Bagdogra or take a train to New Jalpaiguri (NJP) near Siliguri, then drive 5–6 hours via Sevoke, Melli and Jorethang. A private taxi from NJP or Bagdogra usually costs ₹4,000–5,500. Budget travellers can take a shared jeep from Siliguri to Gyalshing and then a short local taxi up to Pelling. From Gangtok, the drive is about 115–131 km and 4.5–6 hours depending on the route.
Our detailed How to Reach Pelling guide compares every option, and the Gangtok to Pelling route guide explains how to turn the transfer into a sightseeing day.

Where to stay in Pelling
Pelling stretches along a ridge, and where you stay matters more than in most hill towns:
- Upper Pelling — the top of the ridge near the helipad and ropeway. Widest views, walkable cafés. Best for first-timers.
- Middle Pelling & Rimbi Road — quieter hotels with mountain-facing rooms just below the ridge.
- Lower Pelling — near the taxi stand, market and ATM. Budget-friendly, flatter walking, fewer views.
- Pemayangtse & Naku-Chumbong — heritage and luxury resorts in forested grounds near the monastery.
- Village homestays — Darap, Sindrong and Khecheopalri for home-cooked food and quiet.

What to see: the four sightseeing loops
Local drivers group Pelling’s sights into loops. Plan your days the same way:
- Heritage & Skywalk loop (half day): Pemayangtse Monastery, Rabdentse Ruins, the Pelling Skywalk and Chenrezig statue, Sanga Choeling and the helipad at sunset.
- West valley & sacred lake loop (half to full day): Darap village, Rimbi Waterfall, the rock garden, Khecheopalri Lake and Kanchenjunga Falls.
- High ridge & canyon loop (half day): Singshore Bridge, Changey Waterfall and the Dentam valley.
- Yuksom & Tashiding (full day): Sikkim’s first capital, Dubdi Monastery and the Coronation Throne — see our day trips from Pelling.

Local tips most guides miss
- Set an alarm for about 30 minutes before sunrise. The peaks usually show best from first light until around 9 am, then clouds build.
- Carry cash. Pelling has very few ATMs and they can run dry in peak season.
- Choose breakfast-and-dinner plans; many kitchens close by 8:30–9 pm.
- Pack warm layers year-round — evenings are cool even in May.
- Walk clockwise around chortens and prayer wheels, and remove shoes inside monastery halls.
Frequently asked questions
Is Pelling worth visiting?
Yes — especially if you want close, unobstructed views of Kanchenjunga, quieter streets than Gangtok or Darjeeling, and easy access to some of Sikkim's oldest monasteries.
How many days are enough for Pelling?
Two nights covers the main sights. Three nights lets you do the West Loop and heritage sights at an easy pace, or add a day trip to Yuksom.
Is Pelling better than Gangtok?
They are different. Gangtok is a busy capital and the base for Tsomgo Lake and North Sikkim. Pelling is quieter, closer to Kanchenjunga and better for views, monasteries and slow travel.
What is Pelling famous for?
Sunrise views of Kanchenjunga, Pemayangtse Monastery, the Rabdentse Ruins, the Pelling Skywalk with its 137-ft Chenrezig statue, and nearby Khecheopalri Lake.
