Upper vs Lower Pelling: Where to Stay in Pelling (Zone-by-Zone Guide)

Updated 17 Oct 2026 · 4 min read · By the PellingHotels team

Pelling isn’t one compact town — it’s a long ridge road with clusters of hotels at different heights. Book in the wrong part and you could lose the mountain view, face a steep uphill walk every evening, or find yourself far from anywhere to eat. This guide breaks the town into the zones locals actually use.

Quick answer

  • First visit, view is the priority: Upper Pelling.
  • Quiet nights + view room: Middle Pelling / Rimbi Road.
  • Budget, seniors, late arrival: Lower Pelling.

Upper Pelling: the view ridge

Upper Pelling is the highest part of town, around the old and new helipad, the ropeway towards the Skywalk, and a strip of cafés and small shops. This is where you’ll find the widest, least obstructed views of the Kanchenjunga range. In the evening you can walk to the helipad ground for sunset.

Best for: first-timers, photographers, short stays. Watch out for: road-facing rooms and peak-season bustle. See Upper Pelling hotels.

Middle Pelling & Rimbi Road: the quiet middle

Just below the ridge, the Pelling–Rimbi Road is lined with newer hotels, many built so their rooms face the range. It’s calmer at night and it’s on the way to the West Loop sights. The trade-off is a steep walk up to Upper Pelling, so you’ll take more short taxi rides.

Best for: couples, families wanting quiet with a view. See Middle Pelling hotels.

Lower Pelling: the practical base

Lower Pelling holds the taxi stand, the main market and the SBI ATM. It’s lower on the hillside, so the views are more restricted, but the walking is flatter and shared jeeps leave from here. Rates are usually lower too.

Best for: budget travellers, older travellers, anyone arriving by shared jeep. See Lower Pelling hotels.

Pemayangtse & Naku-Chumbong: resorts in the forest

East of town, around Pemayangtse Monastery and the Rabdentse Ruins, sit Pelling’s heritage and luxury resorts on large, wooded estates. Expect birdsong, space and big views, but you’ll need a car to get to the market.

Best for: honeymooners, slow travellers, families wanting resort facilities. See Pemayangtse hotels.

Village homestays

For something more personal, homestays in Darap, Sindrong or near Khecheopalri Lake offer home-cooked Sikkimese food and village walks. They’re 15–45 minutes from town. See homestays.
