01 _ Why Pelling

The closest you’ll get to Kanchenjunga without a trek — and the right room to see it from

Kanchenjunga glowing at sunrise

Choosing between Pelling hotels starts with one question: which part of the ridge? Pelling sits on a ridge at about 2,150 metres in West Sikkim, facing the third-highest mountain on Earth. On a clear morning the whole Kanchenjunga range — Kabru, Rathong, Pandim and more — lights up gold. Where you stay on that ridge decides whether you see it from your bed or not.

No. Indian nationals don’t need a permit for Pelling, Pemayangtse, Khecheopalri, Yuksom or the usual West Sikkim sights. Foreign nationals need a Restricted Area Permit to enter Sikkim. See our permit guide.

What is the best time to visit Pelling?

October to early December gives the clearest Kanchenjunga views. March to May brings rhododendrons and pleasant weather. July and August are peak monsoon months with frequent cloud and road delays.

How far is Pelling from NJP and Bagdogra?

Pelling is roughly 130–140 km by road from New Jalpaiguri (NJP) and Bagdogra Airport. The drive usually takes 5–6 hours via Melli and Jorethang.

Which part of Pelling is best to stay in?

Upper Pelling for the widest mountain views and walkability; Pemayangtse for heritage resorts and quiet; Lower Pelling for budget stays near the taxi stand and ATM.
