Hotels in Pelling with Kanchenjunga View: How to Get a Room That Faces the Peaks
Waking up to Kanchenjunga from your bed is the single best reason to stay in Pelling. But “mountain view” is one of the most stretched phrases in hotel marketing. Some rooms look straight at the range; others see a slice of it past a water tank. Here’s how to tell the difference before you pay.
The short version
- The strongest views are on the Upper Pelling ridge, the Rimbi Road stretch and the Naku–Pemayangtse ridge.
- Ask for the specific room category that faces the range, not just “a view room”.
- Views are most reliable from October to February, from first light until about 9 am.
Which way does Kanchenjunga face from Pelling?
From Pelling, the Kanchenjunga massif lies to the north and north-west across the deep Rathong and Rangit valleys. The range you’ll see stretches from Kabru and Rathong through Kanchenjunga to Pandim. Rooms on the north-facing side of a ridge-top hotel get the full panorama; rooms facing the road or the south side of the hill usually don’t.

Best areas for Kanchenjunga-view hotels
Upper Pelling
The highest part of town, around the helipad and ropeway. Hotels here have the least obstruction and you can walk to the helipad for sunset. Examples: Norbu Ghang Retreat & Spa, Retreat Crassula Ovata (higher categories), Sikkim Tourist Centre. All Upper Pelling hotels.
Rimbi Road (Middle Pelling)
Many newer hotels just below the ridge are built specifically to face the range: Kaya Gantavya Resort & Spa, Udaan Pine Crest (mountain-view categories), Divine The Celeste. All Middle Pelling hotels.
Naku & Pemayangtse ridge
Resorts on forested estates with open northern views: The Elgin Mount Pandim, The Chumbi Mountain Retreat, Magpie The Chestnut Retreat. All Pemayangtse hotels.
Lower Pelling
Lower on the hillside, so views are more limited. Upper floors of some hotels catch part of the range. Choose Lower Pelling for convenience and budget rather than the view.
View types explained
| Our label | What it means |
|---|---|
| Panoramic Kanchenjunga view | The property is oriented to the range and most room categories look at it. |
| Kanchenjunga-view rooms | Only some categories (usually “premium” or “mountain view”) face the range — book those specifically. |
| Valley / forest view | Pleasant green or valley outlook; you’ll walk or drive to a viewpoint for Kanchenjunga. |
How to make sure you get a view room
- Book the category, not the hotel. Choose the room type the hotel names as “Kanchenjunga view” or “mountain view”.
- Ask for an upper floor. Higher floors clear rooftops and trees.
- Get it in writing. A confirmation email or WhatsApp message naming the view avoids arguments at check-in.
- Check the balcony direction. Ask: “Does the balcony face north towards Kanchenjunga?”
- Arrive in daylight if possible, so you can see the view and swap rooms if needed.
When will you actually see the peaks?
Clear mornings are most frequent from October to February. In spring (March–May) you’ll often get a clear dawn followed by haze by mid-morning. During the monsoon (June–September) the range can stay hidden for days. Whatever the month, the best window is from about 30 minutes before sunrise to 9 am. Read our month-by-month guide for details.
No view from your room? Walk to the Upper Pelling helipad ground, or go early to the Skywalk or Sanga Choeling Monastery for some of the best public viewpoints in town.
